Given : A bus and a car are running on parallel roads in the same  direction.

The driver of the bus observes that the car coming from behind

overtakes and crosses him completely in 60 seconds. Whereas a person

in the car marks that he crosses the bus in 40 seconds. If the speeds of

bus and car is in ratio 1 : 2.

To  Find : the ratio of their lengths

Solution:

Length of Bus  = B  m

Length of Car  = C  m

for Bus driver  Extra  Distance Covered by Car = B + C m

for Car driver  Extra  Distance Covered by Car =   B     m

Speed of Bus  = x   m/s   and speed of Car  = 2x  m/s

Relative speed of car  =  x m/s

Extra  Distance covered  in 60 secs  =  60x

Extra  Distance covered  in 40 secs  =  40x

60x  =  B + C

40x  = B  =>  60x = 1.5B

B + C = 1.5B

=>  0.5B = C

=> B = 2C

=> B : C  =   2  :1

the ratio of their lengths = 2 : 1
