a bus seems to be travelling slower when our bus overtakes other but the bus seems to be travelling when it is coming from the opposite direction why?

Explanation:

Its because of the difference in speed,if you are travelling to the same direction as a vehicle,the speed percieved of the other vehicle, would be the difference between yours and his.(this is for overtaking).

The observation that in overtaking bus seems to be travelling slower but  seems to traveling fast when coming from opposite direction is due to -

  • When two objects are moving in same direction , the relative velocity or observed velocity from one object to another is equal to the difference of the velocities of the objects .
  • When two objects are moving in opposite direction , the relative velocity  is equal to the sum of the velocities of the objects .
