Given : A bus travelled the first half of its route at an average speed of 40 km hr.

average  speed for the entire trip was 48  km/hr,

To Find :  the average speed of the bus for the  second half its route.

Solution:

Distance = Speed x Time

Let say Total Distance = 2D km

First Half = 2D/2 = D km

Speed = 40 km/hr

Time =  D/40    hr

Second Half = 2D/2 = D km

Speed = X  km/hr

Time =  D/X   hr

Total Distance = 2D km

Speed = 48 km/hr

Time  = 2D/48 = D/24  hr

D/40  +  D/X  =  D/24

=> 1/40 + 1/X  = 1/24

Multiplying both sides by 120X

=> 3X + 120 = 5X

=>2X = 120

=> X = 60

average speed of the bus for the  second half its route. = 60 km/hr
