A capillary tube (A) is dipped in water. Another identical tube(B) is dipped in a soap-water solution. Which of the following shows the relative nature of the liquid columns in the two tubes ?

The option is "c"
 capillary rise h= 2T cos theta/pgr.As the solution has lowe T, h will be low

The Pressure in tube B will be more because of extra soap bubbles at the top of the beaker resulting in more pressure than the normal atmospheric pressure.

  • With water, the shape of the meniscus is concave upwards.

        Also as per the rule of the ascent - h = 2TcosФ/rpg

  • As the soap solution surface tension (T) is inferior to water, therefore the increase in the capillary tube of the soap solution is less relative to water. As is the case for water, soap solution's meniscus form is also concave upwards.
