A car accelerates from rest at a constant rate of 2 m/s2 for some time. Then, it retards at a constant rate if 4 m/s2 and to rest. What is the maximum speed attaained by the car, if it remains in motion for 3 seconds.

A car accelerates from rest at a constant rate of 2m/s² for some time. then, it retards at a constant rate of 4m/s² and to rest.

firstly , car accelerates . let car is accelerating for t sec.
use formula, v = u + at
v = 0 + 2t ...............(1)

after t sec car starts to retards at a constant rate of 4m/s². Car became rest after (3 - t) sec.
e.g., initial velocity in this case , u = v = 2t
so, v = u + aT ,
final velocity, v = 0 [ finally, car becomes rest ]
u = 2t, a = -4 m/s² and T = (3 - t)
now, 0 = 2t + (-4)(3 - t)
2t - 12 + 4t = 0
6t = 12 => t = 2 sec

so, maximum speed attained by car ,v = 2t = 2 × 2 = 4 m/s
