QuestioN :

A car accelerates uniformly from 18 km h⁻¹ to 36 km h⁻¹ in 5 s. Calculate (i) the acceleration and (ii) the distance covered by the car in that time.

GiveN :

  • accelerates uniformly from 18 km h⁻¹ to 36 km h⁻¹ in 5 s.

To FiNd :

  • Calculate the acceleration
  • Calculate the distance covered by the car in that time.

ANswer :

\bigstar The acceleration of the car is 1 m s⁻².

\bigstar The distance covered is 37.5 m.

SolutioN :

Given that,

  • \sf u=18\:km\:h^-^1=5\:m\:s^-^1
  • \sf v = 36\:km\:h^-^1=10m\:s^-^1\:and
  • \sf t = 5\:s.

i) we know that,

\sf a = \dfrac{v-u}{t}

\sf \implies \dfrac{10m\:s^-^1-5\:m\:s^-^1}{5\:s}

\sf \implies 1\:m\:s^-^2

ii) We have,

\sf s=u\:t +\dfrac12at^2

\sf \implies 5\:m\:s^-^1 \times 5\:s + \dfrac12\times1\:m\:s^-^2\times [5\:s]^2

\sf \implies 25\:m + 12.5\:m

\sf \implies 37.5\:m

∴Hence, The acceleration of the car is 1 m s⁻² and the distance covered is 37.5 m.
