A car and a truck were travelling in the same direction along the same road. The car was travelling at a constant speed of 70km/h and the truck was travelling at a constant speed of 58 km/h.At 08:00, the truck was 20km ahead of the car. Half hour later, the truck broke down.
a.) How far was the truck from the car when it broke down?
b.) What time did the car pass the truck?

● Explanation -

a) Let s be the distance at which the truck broke down.

s = 20 + 0.5×58

s = 20 + 29

s = 49 km

Distance covered by car in half hour -

s' = 0.5×70

s' = 35 km

Thus, the truck was 49-35 = 14 km from the car when it broke down.

b) Let the car passes the truck after time t. Truck is already broken down after half hour, so its at 49 km.

70t = 49

t = 49/70

t = 0.7 hr

t = 42 min

Thus the car passes the truck at 8:00 am + 42 min = 8:42 am.
