A car is moving in a straight line with speed 18km/h. It is stopped in 5s by applying the brakes. Find : (i) the speed of car in m/s,(ii) the retardation and (iii) the speed of car after 2s of applying the brakes.

Given,

u = 18 km/h = 18*1000/60*6 = 5 m/s

v = o m/s

t = 5 sec


we know that ,

acceleration = v - u/t

= 0 - 5/5 = -1 m/s2

=retardation

again,

2as = v2- u2

=> 2*-1*s = 0 - 25

=> -2s = - 25

=> s = 12.5 m

(s is distance)

now,

speed = distance/time

= 12.5/5

= 5/2

= 2.5 m/s

also given that,

t = 2 sec, s = 12.5 m

:. speed= s/t

= 12.5/2

= 125/20

= 25/4

= 6.25 m/s
