A car moving along in a straight highway from point p to point q to point r to point s, then back to point q and finally to point r as shown in the figure.

1) find the distance travelled by the car.
2) Find the displacement of the car.

Answer:

(a) As the car goes from O to P:

Since the car moves in a straight line, the distance will be equal to the displacement.

Total distance = Total displacement=360

The time taken by the car is=18 sec

Average speed of car is given by:

 vavg=Total time takenTotal distance

=18360=20 m/s

Average velocity of the car is given by:

=Total time takenTotal displacement

=18360=20 m/s

(b)As the car goes from O to P and then back to O:

Total distance covered by car =360+(360−240)=360+120=480 m

The total displacement of car =240 m

Total time taken =18+6=24 sec

Average speed

=24480=20 m/s

Average velocity

=24240=10 m/s
