A car starts at rest and begins to speed up with an acceleration of 1.7 m/s². What distance (in meters) does this car cover in 5.0 seconds?
(-it's kinematics)
(and plz give me a formula for distance.)
Also, the answer is not 130, or speed x time.

Given :

  • initial velocity = 0 m/s

  • acceleration = 1.7 m/s²

  • time = 5 seconds

To find :

  • distance covered by the car.

Formula used :

s = ut +  \dfrac{1}{2} a {t}^{2}

where :

  • s = distance
  • u = initial velocity
  • a = acceleration
  • t = time

Solution :

initial velocity = 0 m/s

acceleration = 1.7 m/s²

time = 5 seconds

 \implies \: s = ut +  \dfrac{1}{2} a {t}^{2}

\implies \: s = (0 \times 5)+ ( \dfrac{1}{2}  \times 1.7 \times {5}^{2} )

\implies \: s = 0+ ( \dfrac{1}{2}  \times 1.7 \times {5}^{2} )

\implies \: s =  ( \dfrac{1}{2}  \times  \dfrac{17}{10}  \times {25} )

\implies \: s =  (    \dfrac{17 \times 25}{2 \times 10}  )

\implies \: s =  \dfrac{425}{20}

\implies \: s =  21.25m

Answer :

  • distance = 21.25 metres

 \implies \: v = u + at

 \implies \: s = ut +  \dfrac{1}{2} a {t}^{2}

\implies \:  {v}^{2}  -  {u}^{2} =  2as
