so, time taken by car to reach b = x/ 20 hr

and time taken by bus to reach b = x/30 + 1*1/2 hr as bus starts 1*1/2 hr late

According to question , bus reached 22 minutes earlier

so, x/20 - (x/30 + 1*1/2 ) =22/60 hr
or, x/20 - (x/30+3/2) =22/60
or, (3x - 2x )/60 = 22/60 + 3/2
or, x/60 = 22+90 /60=112/60
so, x =112 km

So, distance between a and b is 112 km.
