A car travels a distance of 2000 m. If the first half
distance is covered at 40 km/hour and the second half
at velocity v and if the average velocity is 48 km/hour,
then the value of v is -

We know ,

velocity is V = Distance / Time  

average velocity is V = Total Distance Traveled / Total Time Taken  

Total journey took (T = Distance / Velocity)  

2000 / 48 = 125/3 = 41.66666 hours  

1st half of the journey took (T = Distance / Velocity)  

1000 / 40 = 25 hours  

So the other half of the journey took (Average Velocity = Total Distance Traveled / Total Time Taken)  

48 = (1000 + 1000) / (25 + t)  

-->Cross multiply and solve  

48t = 2000 - (48 x 25)  

t = (800 / 48)  

t = 50/3 = 16.666666 hours  

2nd half of the journey (V = Distance / Time)  

1000 / 16.666666 = 60 km/hr  

To check if all of this is true find the average velocity  

(1000 + 1000) / (25 + 16.666666) = 48 km/hr..
