So as you know average speed = Total distance travelled/ total time taken.
Therefore, we need to find distance.
Now first the car was travelling at the speed of 40 km per hour for 2 hrs and secondly the car was travelling at the speed of 60 km per hour for 3 hrs.
Now as we know, speed= distance / time.
Therefore by interchanging we get distance is equal to speed upon time.
Now for the first speed, 40/2=20km
And for the second speed,60/3=30km.
so the total distance =20+30=50km
And the total time =2+3=5hrs.
Therefore by applying the formula, average speed = Total distance travelled / total time taken.
We get, 50km/5hrs=10km/hr.
