Let the no. of stools be 'x' and the no. of chairs be 'y'

x + y = 20 ................ (i)      No. of items
3x + 4 y = 72 ............ (ii)    No. of legs

Solving (i) and (ii) simultaneously .>Multiply (i) by 3
       3x + 3y = 60
   -   3x + 4y = 72 ............ (i)
       ----------------
             - y = -12
               y = 12

x = 20 - 12 = 8

∴ Stools are 8 while chairs are 12.
