Answer:

5, 28

Step-by-step explanation:

total no of oranges= a

no of persons in the family = b

if each family member get 5 oranges there will be 3 oranges left in the carton

a = b X 5 + 3 --------> (I)

if every family member gets seven oranges there will be shortage of 7 oranges

a = b X 7 -7 --------> (ii)

from (I), (ii)

b X 5 +3 = b X 7 -7

b X 2= 10

b = 5

from (I)

a = b X 5 +3= 5 X 5 +3= 28

total no of oranges= a= 28

no of persons in the family = b= 5
