Given : a CCTV camera is placed on the top of a 12 m high pole in such a way that traffic can be seen beyond 13 meter of line of sight of it .

To find : the area of the green patch around the pole

Solution:

Line of sight of camera = 13 m  is hypotenuse

12 m high pole is perpendicular

Base = ?

Pythagoras' theorem: square on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two perpendicular sides.

=> Base² = 13² - 12²

=> Base² = (13 + 12)(13 - 12)

⇒ Base² = (25)(1)

=> Base = 5

Area of triangle = (1/2) x Base x Height

= (1/2) * 5 * 12

= 30 m²
