Osmotic pressure on a cell is created when the cells has greater solute concentration than the environment. In this circumstance, water from the environment will diffuse across the membrane and into the cell. The tendency for water to do this is called osmotic pressure.

▶Osmotic pressure is the minimum pressure which needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of its pure solvent across a semipermeable membrane.

Solvent molecules pass preferentially through the membrane from the low-concentration solution to the solution with higher solute concentration.
