When the number increased by 5, the number becomes x + 5

One half of the number = $\dfrac{1}{2}$(x + 5)

Two fifth of the number reduced from 85 = $\dfrac{2}{5}$(85 - x)


According to the question,

$\dfrac{1}{2}$(x + 5) = $\dfrac{2}{5}$(85 - x)

➾ x - 5 = $\dfrac{4}{5}$ × (85 - x)

➾ x - 5 = 68 - $\dfrac{4}{5}$x

➾ 5x - 25 = 340 - 4x

➾ 5x + 4x = 340 + 25

➾ 9x = 365

➾ x = $\dfrac{365}{9}$

➾ x = 40.56 (approx.)



∴ The number is 40.56
