CHANGES IN THE TENSE OF THE VERB OF THE DIRECT SPEECH
(1) If the reporting verb is in the present or in the future tense, the tense of the verb in
the indirect speech is not changed:
e.g. (i) The old woman says, “I am lonely."
The old woman says that she is lonely.
(ii) Sandhya will say, “I need another pen.
Sandhya will say that she needs another pen.
(2) If the reporting verb is in the past tense, the following changes take place in the
tense of the verb in the indirect speech.
(a) The simple present tense in the direct speech changes to the simple past
tense.
e.g. Preeti said, “I am ill."
Preeti said that she was ill.
(b) The present progressive tense in the direct speech changes to the past
progressive tense.
e.g. They said, “We are watching a movie with our friends."
They said that they were watching a movie with their friends.
(c) The present perfect tense in the direct speech changes to past perfect tense.
e.g. Rohan said, “I have seen this film twice”
Rohan said that he had seen that film twice.
(d) “Will'and, in many cases, 'shall' is changed to 'would'.
Romil said, "My uncle will sell his car."
Romil said that his uncle would sell his car.
(ii) Suresh said, “I shall go to the temple tomorrow."
Suresh said that he would go to the temple the next day.
