Phosphinic acid is used in chemical plating among other places. Here, a reducing agent being used should have low oxidation- reduction potential, strong reducing power and its oxidation should be slow, which phosphinic acid fulfils. Thus, a salt of phosphinic acid is used at anode. The reaction being:

 

H2PO2- +H2O→ H3PO3- + H+ +2
