Let the number of passengers that were charged 50 paise be 'x' and the passengers that were charged Rs. 1 be 70 - x.
Total amount received = Rs. 56
Therefore, according to the question
0.5x + (70 -x)1 = 56
0.5x + 70 - x = 56
0.5x - x = 56 - 70
- 0.5x = - 14
x = 14/0.5
x = 28
28 passengers were charged 50 paise.
And, the number of passengers who were charged Rs. 1 were 70 - 28 = 42.
