Answer:

Step - 1 : Find number of students who passed both in English and maths

Let, E be the set of students who passed in english.

and, M be the set of students who passed in maths.

Total number of students = n(E∪M)=1000

Number of students who passed in english= n(E)=525

Number of students who passed in maths= n(M)=625

Number of students who passed both english and maths=n(E∩M)

⇒n(E∪M)=n(E)+n(M)−n(E∩M)

⇒1000=525+625−n(E∩M)

⇒n(E∩M)=1150−1000

⇒n(E∩M)=150

Step - 2 : Find number of students who passed only in English

Number of students passed in english= 525

Number of students passed in English and maths both = 150

∴Number of students passed only in English = 525−150=375

Hence, the number of students who only passed in English is 375.

Find number of students who passed only in Maths

Number of students passed in maths= 625

Number of students passed in English and maths both = 150

∴Number of students passed only in maths = 625−150=475

Hence, the number of students who only passed in maths is 475.
