A closed container contains 56 gram of N2 and 20 gram of H2 if partial pressure of N2 is 1 ATM then find total pressure of the gas molecules in the container
Answers
total pressure of the gas molecules in the container is 6atm.
mass of N2 gas = 56gram
molecular mass of N2 = 28 g/mol
so, no of moles of N2 = 56/28 = 2 mol
similarly, mass of H2 gas = 20g
no of moles of H2 = 20/2 = 10 mol
now, mole fraction of N2 = 2/(2 + 10) = 2/12 = 1/6
and mole fraction of H2 = 10/(2 + 10) = 5/6
given,
partial pressure of N2 = 1atm
let total pressure of the gas molecules in the container is P
so, Partial pressure of N2 = mole fraction of N2 × total pressure
⇒1 = 1/6 × P
⇒P = 6 atm
