A coin is dropped into a deep well and is heard to hit the water 3.41 s after being

dropped. Determine the depth of the well.

We know that,


Distance = Speed * Time


Given that, Speed of Sound in air is 340 m / s


Also time = 3.41 seconds 

But here the time includes both the initial falling time and also the traveling time of sound. Hence it becomes twice the distance traveled. Hence we must divide the final distance by 2 to get the correct depth of well. Hence on calculating final depth we get,

Final depth = D = speed * time

=> D = 340 m / s * 3.43 

=> Final depth ( Counting twice ) = 1159.4 m

So this is twice the distance travelled. Hence original distance is 

D = 1159.4 / 2 => 579.7 m

Hence the distance or depth of the well is 579.7 m
