These lines have been taken from A.G. Gardiner’s famous essay On the Rule of the Road’. In these lines the essayist talks about the liberty. Explain – Liberty is not a personal affair only but it is a social contract. If a person has the liberty to walk in the middle of the road, then what will come out will be a universal chaos. Everybody will get in everybody else’s way and nobody will get anywhere. Individual liberty will have become social disorder. Liberty, therefore, has to be a social contract. It is an accommodation of the rights and feelings of others. A curtailment of personal liberty is necessary to make our liberty a reality. Critical Note-These simple lines provide us a great message about liberty. How can we live in a harmonious society is told to us. The words selected are simple. The language structure is easy to understand.
