Answer:

A compound contains 40 % carbon, 6.6 % hydrogen, and 53.3 % oxygen by mass. What is the empirical formula of this compound? And, if molecular weight of compound is 90 g/mole, find its molecular formula?

C : H : O = 40/12 : 6.6/1 : 53.3/16 = 3.3 : 6.6 : 3.3 = 1 : 2 : 1

So, the empirical formula : CH2O

Molecular formula : (CH2O)n

n×(12+2×1+16) = 90

30n = 90

n = 3

So, Molecular formula: C3H6O2
