let the total weight of the compound be = x

Then

carbon = 20% of x

so,

20% of x + 160 = x

20/100×x + 160 = x

160 = x - 20x/100

160 = 80x/100

160 = 8x/10

160×10 = 8x

x = 160×10 /80

× = 200g

Step-by-step explanation:

we know that a whole compound composition is its 100% and it is given that carbon is present 20 % so by substraction we can know that the percentage of hydrogen present is 80 % and amount of hydrogen is given as 160 . we know that the hydrogen is present on 80% concentration and amount is 160g so we can equate them to fi d the whole value of the compound.

Answer:

The amount of carbon is 40 g and total amount of the compound is 200 g.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given,a compound has 20% of carbon and the rest is hydrogen.

So, percentage of carbon = 20\%

and percentage of hydrogen  = (100 - 20)\% = 80\%

Let total amount of carbon be x g.

It is also given that the amount of hydrogen in the compound is 160g.

So, 80% of x  = 160

We know, a% of b

 =  \frac{a}{100}  \times b \\  =  \frac{ab}{100}

For example,

20\% \: of \: 100 \\  =  \frac{20}{100}  \times 100 \\  =  \frac{1}{5}  \times 100 \\  = 20

So,

80\% \: of \: x = 160 \\  \frac{80}{100} \times x  = 160 \\ x = 160 \times  \frac{100}{80}  \\ x = 2 \times 100 \\ x = 200

Therefore, amount of compound is 200 g and amount of carbon is (200-160) = 40 g
