- Alkyl isocyanides on hydrolysis in presence of dil. acids give primary amines. Formic acid is formed qs byproduct.
R-NC + 2H2O ---> R-NH2 + HCOOH

- For example, ethyl isocyanide on hydrolysis with dil.HCl gives ethyl amine.
CH3-CH2-NC + 2H2O ---> CH3-CH2-NH2 + HCOOH
