A compound 'X' is formed by the reaction of carboxylic acid (C2H4O2) and an alcohol in presence of a few drops of H2SO4 the alcohol on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4 followed by acidification gives the same carboxylic acid as used in this reaction.Given the names and the structures of (a)carboxylic acid, (b)alcohol, and (c)the compound 'X'. Also write the reaction

Let us look at the answer:

Explanation:

The carboxylic acid (CH₃COOH) ethanoic acid on reaction with an alcohol (CH₃CH₂OH) ethyl alcohol reacts in the presence of alkaline KMnO₄/ K₂Cr₂O₇ to give a compound X ethyl ethanoate. (CH₃COOC₂H₅).

So, the answer is:

a) Ethanoic acid, CH₃COOH

b) Ethyl alcohol, CH₃CH₂OH

c) Ethyl ethanoate,  CH₃COOC₂H₅

The given reaction is :

    CH₃COOH + CH₃CH₂OH ---------> CH₃COOCH₂CH₃ + H₂O
