you can use to calculate the empirical formula of the gas,

if the gas is 87.4% nitrogen by mass, then for every 100 g of the gas, 87.4 g of it must be nitrogen. Also, as the gas contains only nitrogen and hydrogen, the remaining 12.6 g (out of the 100 g), must be due to hydrogen. Using the molecular masses of nitrogen (14.01) and hydrogen (1.008) you can work out the number of moles of each element are in 87.4 g and 12.6 g respectively. This should get you the empirical formula, NH2.
