Hi ,

This is related to direct proportion:
__________________________

If the value of x increases , value of y

also increases in such a way that the

ratio x/y doesnot change ; it remains

constant say (k).

Thus , two numbers x and y are said

to vary in direct proportion If x/y = k

Where k is a constant.

In our case , of y1, y2 are the values

of y corresponding to the values x1 ,

x2 of x respectively then

x1 / y1 = x2 / y2

Capacity of the container is directly
_______
proportion to time taken to fill the
____
container

Let x1 =5/8 gallons ; y1 = 1 hr

x2 = 10 gallons ; y2 =?

x 1 / y1 = x2 / y2

(5 / 8)/1 = 10/ y2

Do the cross multiplication

y2 = (10 / 1) ÷ ( 5/ 8)

y2 = ( 10/ 1 ) × (8 / 5)

y2 = 2 × 8

y2 =16 hours

Therefore time taken to fill the 10

gallons container = y2 = 16 hours.
