(a) Convert benzene to aniline using the following reagent in correct order. Alkaline KMnO4 followed by HCl, NH3, heat, Br2/ KOH, CH3Cl + Anh. AlCl3. (b) Ethylamine is soluble in water whereas aniline in not.

(a) Toluene

(b)Ethylamine when added to water forms intermolecular H−bonds with water. And therefore it is soluble in water. But aniline does not form H−bond with water to a very large extent due to the presence of a large hydrophobic −C6H5group. Hence, aniline is insoluble in water.
