u = distance of object v = distance of image Also (v/u) = x (1/v) – (1/u) = (1/f) ∴ 1 – (v/u) = (v/f) ∴ 1 – x = (v/f) ∴ v = f(1 – x) for real image x is negative ∴ v = f(1 + x) as u = (v/x) hence u = [{f(1 + x)} / x]
