Given:

A couple does not wish to spend more than Php 3500.00 for dinner at their favourite restaurant.

If a  sales tax of  7 1/2% is added to the bill and they plan to tip 15% after the tax is added

To find:

What is the  most they can spend on the meal?

Solution:

Let's assume "x" represents the amount the couple can spend on the meal.

So,

The bill amount after adding 7½ % sales tax is = x + \frac{7.5x}{100} = 1.075x

Also, the couple plans to give a tip of 15% after the tax

∴ The bill amount after including the tip = 1.075x + \frac{15}{100}\times 1.075x = 1.23625x

Since the couple does want to spend more than Php 3500.00

i.e., The total amount spent by the couple after including the sales tax and the tip = Php 3500

1.23625x = 3500

\bold{x = 2831.14}

Thus, the maximum amount they can spend on the meal is Php 2831.14.
