Dear Student,

(a) Covalent compounds have weak melting and boiling point because -

  • Covalent bonds are weak as compared to ionic bonds.
  • As these bonds take less energy to break, they have low boiling and melting points.

(b) Ester -

  • Ester is an organic compound made by replacing the hydrogen of an acid by an alkyl or other organic group

Activity to show esterification -

  • Take 1 ml of ethanol and 1 ml of ethanoic acid in a test tube.
  • Put few drops of conc.H2SO4 to it.
  • In this reaction, sweet smelling substance is formed. This is ethyl ethanoate (ester).

CH3COOH + CH3CH2OH --> CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O

Thanks dear...
