The Merchant of Venice is a play written by William Shakespeare is a story of love and vengeance.

The Merchant has three prominent characters; Portia, Jessica and Nerissa. All three own different personalities which effects the storyline in different ways.

Portia is seen to be a brave and independent woman who single handedly wins over the clever Jew, Shylock. Jessica does show bravery as she elopes with a Christian, Lorenzo and takes away all her father's wealth, yet she does not show any signs of confident and confrontational attitude like Portia. Nerissa, however is a calm and quiet character who helps Portia but is not as prominent as Portia.

The thing that connects the three women is "love". Their love for their spouses is what is common among the three women. Jessica eloped in the love of Lorenzo. Portia and Nerissa give rings to Bassanio and Gratiano which are a symbol of their love and betrothal.

As a whole, these three women are three aspects of the play, which effect it one way or the other.
