A crowd is not a company.

“The trouble is not really in being alone, it's being lonely. One can be lonely in the midst of a crowd, don't you think?” says Christine Feehan in Dark Prince

It is quite true that crowd is never a company. We feel the direst need of company during the turbulent times of our life. life, as all will agree with me, is a series of vicissitudes. The ups are so agreeable and pleasant. We find ourselves surrounded by a crowd (though everyone in the crowd is engrossed in his self), the time just flees. Then come the downs, you find the weight of burdens of life weighing heavy on you, it is during this trying time we realize the insensitiveness and apathy of the crowd of people. People just keep milling around us; we don’t get any sympathy and care from the milling crowd. In spite of being in an ocean of people, we feel like a forsaken island!

The paradox is quite noticeable! There more than 108 billion people living on our planet, Earth; and in spite of such a gargantuan number, every other inhabitant feels lonely, abandoned, depressed, forsaken, and woebegone! It is true there is always a crowd around us; but at times we want the company of someone who can share our sorrows and double our joys. Except our parents, there is no one who stands by us during the downs. Anton Chekov’s famous story ‘Grief’ is an appropriate example in this context.
