Explanation:
The city known as Madras was officially renamed as Chennai on 17 July 1996 by our government. Chennai was originally an uninhabited land. It was part of the Vijayanagara Kingdom. The first British fortress was built here in 1644 and the coastal city evolved around this fort. St. George's Fort currently houses the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and other official buildings.
