reverence for life has been a part of Indian thought since time immemorial. All the major religions that took birth in India-Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism- have enshrined this philosophy of life. The tradition of Wildlife preservation dates back to Vedic period. Hinduism gave mythological importance to trees, nature and animals and so did all other religions. As studied in the preceding chapter most of the animals have been held in high esteem of God. The presence of thought on preservation of animal life since ancient times indicates that customary laws might mandate that appropriate steps be taken to protect endangered species.
Ironically, the importance of Wildlife to human beings has been little understood in India which has resulted in destruction and extinction of large variety of rare species of animals. The rapid extinction of many species of animals is an increasing concern. In addition the wildlife is not having adequate food, habitat, water etc. which is detrimental to the existence of wildlife in India. Wildlife is an integral part of forest and important ingredient of environment and bio- diversity.
