(a) Define torque acting on a dipole moment p Placed in a uniform electric
field E. Express it in the vector form and point out the direction alongP
which it acts.
(b) What happens if the electric field is non-uniform ?
(C) What would happen if the external field E is increasing (i) Parallel to
p (ii) anti-parallel to p ?

The torque is defined as the product of the charge and electric field acting on the charge.

  • The vector notation of the torque is τ=p×E.
  • The direction on both p and E is acting perpendicular to both.
  • The electric field is non- uniform then the net force acting on them is not equal to zero.
  • The electric field in both cases are increasing with point P. But the difference came in the direction when they are in parallel, then both are in same direction.
  • When they are in perpendicular the direction is opposite to each other.
