The statement is true. We see that Johnsy is suffering from pneumonia and she has a chance to survive only if she has the will to live. Jhonsy is a pessimistic person and loses all her hopes of living. Thus she picks up a strange fancy. If not for the efforts of Sue And Berhman she would have died. Her fancy made her more fragile than the disease
