Let the starting point be x,

  • The person moves 5 m in east and stops at point say y.
  • He turns left in the north and travels 12 m and stops at the point say z.

Now, obviously the total distance covered will be;

= Distance(x + y) + Distance(y + z)

= 5 + 12

= 17 m

Hence, the total distabce covered be 17 m.

From the diagram, as the situation is in the form of a right angled triangle, we can use the pythagoras theoram, likewise;

= H² = P² + B²

= xz = yz + xy

= xz² = 12² + 5²

= xz² = 144 + 25

= xz = √196

= xz = 13 m

Therefore, the displacement will be 13 m.
