1.A positive correlation means that the variables move in the same direction. Put another way, it means that as one variable increases so does the other, and conversely, when one variable decreases so does the other. A negative correlation means that the variables move in opposite directions.

2.In other words, when all the points on the scatter diagram tend to lie near a line which looks like a straight line, the correlation is said to be linear. This is shown in the figure on the left below. Correlation is said to be non linear if the ratio of change is not constant.
