(i) When the egg is fertilized, zygote is formed. The walls of the uterus thicken and become ready for the implantation of the zygote on the uterine wall. Once implanted, the zygote begins to develop and covers itself with a thin membrane called the amniotic sac Placenta, a special tissue that connects the embryo and uterine wall, is formed.
(ii) If the egg released is not fertilized, then zygote is not formed. The thick wall of the uterus is of no use and it will break down and be expelled through the vagina in the form of menstrual blood. This process is called menstruation.
