Answer:

Let n = total number of socks

n1 = number of red socks

n2= number of black socks

n1+n2=n

P(2 red)= (n1C2)/(nC2) = [n1!/(n1-2)!2]/[n!/(n-2)!/2]

= n1(n1-1)/(n(n-1))=1/2

If n1=3 then n1(n1-1)=6

then n(n-1)=12 then n=4 then n2=4-3=1

Answer: n=4 (3 red socks and 1 black sock)
