A driver of a car travelling at 54 km/h applies brakes and accelerates uniformly in the opposite direction. The car stops in 5 s. Another driver going at 36 km/h in another car applies his brakes slowly and stops in 10 s.

On the same graph paper plot the velocity - time graphs for the two cars. Which of the two cars travelled farther after the brakes were applied?

Answer: Car B travelled farther than Car A after the brakes were applied.

Explanation:

Car A

u=54km/h = 15m/s

v=0m/s

s= Area under the graph of car A with time axis

s=[1/2] x base x height

=[1/2] x 5 x 15

=37.5m

Car B

u= 36km/h = 10m/s

v=0m/s

s= Area under the graph of car B with time axis

s= [1/2] x base x height

 =[1/2] x 10 x 10

 =50m
