GIVEN:

  • T = 0.2s
  • Initial velocity, u = 54 km/h = 54 x 5/18 = 15 m/s
  • Deceleration, a = 6 m/s^2
  • Final velocity, v = 0 m/s

TO FIND:

  • Find the distance traveled by the car after he sees the need to put the brakes.

SOLUTION:

Now, Distance travelled by car during reaction time :

Distance = Speed x time

Distance = 15 x 0.2

                =3 m

From third equation of motion:

v² - u² = 2as

0² - 15 x 15 = 2 x -6 x s

s = -15 x 15 / -12

s = 225 / 12a

s = 18.75 m

Distance = 18.75 + 3 = 21.75 m

Therefore, the total distance travelled by the driver after he sees the need to put the brakes on is 21.75 m
