To find : The time after which the drunkard will fall in pit located 11 m away.

Solution :

He takes 5 steps forward

→ 5 m travelled in 5 seconds

Then he takes 3 steps backward

→ 3 m travelled in 3 seconds.

But, he takes 3 m backward so net displacement = 5 - 3 = 2m

Time taken for this net displacement = 5 + 3 = 8 seconds.

Now, we will calculate how much time he will require for a net displacement of 6 m

2 m requires 8 seconds

→ 6 m requires 24 seconds

(Velocity = displacement/time, → Velocity = 2m/8s = 6m/x seconds, → x = 24 seconds)

Now, in 24 seconds he has travelled 6 m, now he will take 5 steps forward and will cover a distance of 11 m and thus, will fall in pit!

So, total time = 24 seconds + 5 seconds = 29 seconds.

According to the question we have given :-

Distance covered in one step = 1 metre in 1 sec.

So, Time taken to move first 5 m forward = 5 sec

And , Time taken to move 3 m backward = 3 sec

Hence, according to the question :-

Net distance covered = 5m – 3m = 2 m

[ 2 metre is the net distance covered by drunkyard ]

Net time taken to cover 2 m = 8 sec

Hence for For 8 total steps it takes 8 seconds, and moves in total 2 steps forward (2 m)

Therefore :-

3 ×2 m = 6 m at 3rd repeatation

So, Total Time Elapsed = 24 sec

After walking 5 m forward, he takes 5s more. So, It becomes 11 meters

Now by adding given information we get :-

Time = 24 + 5 = 29 seconds

Hence, the drunkard will fall into the pit after 29 seconds
