An earthquake rocked Gujarat on January 26, 2001. It is estimated that over 13,000 people lost their lives having been buried under the debris of buildings that collapsed. At least, 15 lakh persons were injured. There were around 8 lakh houses, so many of them multi-storeyed that collapsed. Roads and bridges were also damaged adding to the misery of the affected people.The earthquake had its epicenter at a place near Bhuj. Maximum damage was caused at places in the immediate surroundings of the epicenter. The earthquake was caused by the movement of the Indian plate as it pushed into the Eurasian plate.
