[] Let the maximum marks be 'x'.
• It is given that an examinee got 35% of total marks and failed by 20 marks.
So, passing marks,
= 35% of x + 20
= 35/100 × x + 20
= 35x/100 + 20... [equation i]
• It is also given that another examinee got 45% of total marks and passed by 20 marks.
So, passing marks,
= 45% of x - 20
= 45/100 × x - 20
= 45x/100 - 20... [equation ii]
[] But, passing marks has to be one.
=>>> 35x/100 + 20 = 45x/100 - 20
=> 20 + 20 = 45x/100 - 35x/100
=> 40 = (45x - 35x)/100
=> 40 = 10x/100
=> 40 × 100/10 = x
=> 4000/10 = x
=> 400 = x
•°• Total marks = x = 400 marks.
[] Now, passing marks,
= 35x/100 + 20
= (35 × 400)/100 + 20
= 14000/100 + 20
= 140 + 20
= 160.

Thank you.. ;-)
